27/07/2010 - DORCHESTER ONE WORLD FESTIVAL 2010
Planning is well underway for the second Dorchester One World Festival which takes place on Sunday 8 August 2010 from 11 - 4 at Kings Road Playing Field, Kings Road, Dorchester.
This multi cultural festival celebrates our diverse world with a fusion of food, sport, art, craft, music, song and dance provided or performed by local people who want to share their culture and customs with their community.
The festival was launched in 2009 by local resident Khalique Miah who had been the victim of a racist attack and wanted people to gain an insight to the differences in people, bring them together to create understanding and tolerance. He was supported in this work by Dorset Community Action and a local group of Bangladeshi friends who he had helped access English sessions so that they could improve their communication skills and mix more easily with the community. Together they devised the first One World Festival which took place in October 2009. Following on from the success of this event and receiving positive feedback and requests for another event - 2010 is bigger and better! Speak Easy have acquired funding so that they can have a marquee on the site, which will house a ‘Round the World’ Exhibition of items and literature donated by Embassies and Tourism Offices from over 30 Countries, and a covered stage with dance floor.
The Organisers can provide opportunities for people who would like to take part in activities at the Festival – to perform music, dance or song, provide exhibitions or displays of their culture, or to form teams to take part in the organised games of Kabaddi and tug of war. If you would like to be part of the One World Festival on 8 August, or would like to know more please contact Kris Hallett, Community Development Worker at Dorset Community Action on 01305 216409 or email kris.hallett@dorsetcommunityaction.org.uk.
