LOCAL PUPILS GET A LESSON IN HEALTH AND SAFETY - 09/03/2010
Pupils at Downlands Community School at Blandford Garrison in Dorset, donned goggles, hard hats and hi-visibility jackets as they learnt all about staying safe around building sites at a recent health and safety presentation with local construction company, Morgan Ashurst.
The company is currently building a new £2.5 million extension at the school which will house four new classrooms for key stage two pupils. And, because the majority of the work will be taking place during term-time, Morgan Ashurst’s safety, health and environment advisor Simon Young wanted to ensure the youngsters understood how to stay safe.
“Construction sites can be very dangerous places for children and it’s up to us to make sure that they understand what these dangers are so that they stay safe during the project,” he says. “The pupils were a great audience. They really enjoyed trying on all of the protective equipment and learning about health and safety.” He adds: “We hope they enjoy watching their new classrooms come to life over the coming months.”
The construction work at the school is due to be completed by November.
